In Class 3, we are focusing on independence we settle into a new class and a new stage of our journey at St John's. The children are expected to demonstrate independence across all areas of the curriculum and show resilience and determination when they find things challenging. We will encourage the children to take pride in their work, make positive choices and develop the confidence to tackle new learning independently.

R.E.

In R.E., we will be studying Creation and Covenant from the RED (Religious Education Directory). Children will explore the Christian understanding of creation and consider what the Bible teaches about God's relationship with humanity. They will have opportunities to explore Bible stories and passages, ask thoughtful questions and discuss their ideas through group and whole-class activities. We will encourage children to make links between the teachings they explore and their own lives.

English

In English, we will be studying Paddington Bear, using this much-loved character to develop our reading, writing and vocabulary skills. We will revisit and consolidate key grammar skills to ensure the children have a secure foundation before moving towards longer pieces of independent writing. We will focus particularly on identifying and using noun phrases, developing vocabulary and constructing clear and interesting sentences.

Spellings will continue to be sent home on Mondays and tested each following Monday. In class, we will continue to develop our understanding of spelling patterns and apply a wider range of prefixes and suffixes.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we will begin the term by developing a secure understanding of place value. Children will explore numbers up to 1,000, including reading, writing, comparing and ordering numbers and understanding the value of each digit. We will then move on to addition, developing children's confidence with mental strategies and formal written methods, including exchanging where necessary. Children will be encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking and apply their skills to a range of problems.

Science

In Science, we will be learning about Rocks. The children will explore different types of rocks and investigate their properties. They will learn how rocks are formed and begin to understand the processes involved in the rock cycle. Through practical investigations, children will make observations, carry out simple tests and record their findings.

Geography

In Geography, our focus will be The United Kingdom. Children will develop their knowledge of the four countries of the UK and their capital cities. They will explore the location of the UK within Europe and develop their understanding of geographical features, including mountains, rivers and coastlines. Children will also develop their map-reading skills and use geographical vocabulary to describe places and locations.

Design and Technology

In Design and Technology, we will be exploring How We Make Things, following the United Learning curriculum. Children will develop their understanding of how products are designed and made, considering the purpose, materials and processes involved. They will have opportunities to plan, design and make their own products, developing practical skills and evaluating their finished work.

P.E. and Games

Work planned for P.E. will include developing skills in handball, with a focus on passing, catching, movement, attacking and defending. Children will develop their ability to work effectively as part of a team and apply their skills within games.

In Athletics, we will develop fundamental skills including throwing and jumping. Children will work on technique, coordination and control while learning to improve their personal performance and demonstrate resilience when developing new skills.

Computing

In Computing, we will continue to reinforce online safety and responsible use of technology. Children will develop their understanding of how to use digital technology safely and appropriately, while continuing to build their confidence and independence when working with technology.
