It is a statutory requirement that by the end of Year 4, children are taught to recall all multiplication tables up to and including 12 x 12. In order to monitor this, at the end of Year 4 the children will take a 'Multiplication Tables Check' test where the children will be asked 25 questions and will have 6 seconds per question to answer them.

The purpose of the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is "to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will help schools to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their ties tables, so that additional support can be provided." (taken from gov.uk website)
